What Being A Beachbody Coach REALLY Means – hint, it’s NOT sales!
A while back, I wrote up what it’s REALLY like to be a Beachbody Coach. I broke down what it is as well as what it isn’t. I explained how you can get involved, the costs, the income – everything you needed to know! I realized that this post was a long time ago, and many are revisiting it lately! As with most companies, over time, business evolves and changes are made, so I felt it’s about time to post an update on some of the details. So let’s take a fresh look, shall we?
Have you ever seen a tweet, a post, a photo or heard me talking about how much I really love what I do? I mean, outside of my corporate job, really love going home to get work done? Chances are you have, and many of you have experienced it first hand by having me as your coach. Now, have you ever found yourself wondering,
“What the heck IS a Beachbody Coach? What do they do? How do you make money by working out and posting on Instagram? Does this cost money? How do I get involved?!”
Well let’s start at the beginning. “What is a Beachbody Coach?” This is usually the first question I’m asked when I tell people that “no, I’m not a personal trainer (anymore), I’m actually a Beachbody Coach.” A Beachbody Coach is someone who has used and found success with the product line from Beachbody, and they are using their success to inspire, motivate, assist and guide others on their own personal journey. Our business is primarily based online through our blogs, videos, websites and social media. It is our mission to help you set and achieve realistic health & fitness goals, and be your backbone of support in achieving them through workouts, nutrition and positive motivation. As a coach, I guide you through the Team Beachbody Website, including the SuperGym, online store, Shakeology and Ultimate Reset websites, Beachbody On Demand and even the Beachbody Performance line. My success comes from seeing you succeed. If you’re not meeting your goals, I’m not succeeding!
That all being said, there are some things you should know that a Beachbody Coach is NOT. With the exception of those who have extra certifications on their own, Beachbody Coaches are not nutritionists, fitness “experts,” personal trainers, salespeople, figure competitors, body builders, gym owners or professional athletes. Though many people who are the above titles are also Coaches, it is not – I repeat NOT – a requirement that you have any kind of fitness background! Our job is not to write programs for you – that’s already done in each program. Our job is not to write a nutrition plan for you – that’s already done in each program. Our job is not to “sell” you supplements, training packages, etc. – that’s not what we do. Our job is to guide, motivate, help and inspire you to do your best to live healthier every day and guide you toward the program, supplement or fitness tool that is right for you. If you already have a fitness background, that’s great! That will be a great tool to use in your own business! But it is not necessary at all in order to be a successful coach!
“But I’m not in great shape – why would anyone want to listen to me as a fitness coach?”
To be successful as a Coach, all you need is a strong desire to help yourself and help others get fit and live a better, higher quality of life. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or if you have already hit your goal. If you have the drive, the motivation and the desire to spread your passion like fire, you can be successful. In fact, it might even work in your favor to not be finished with your initial goal! For one, by not being at your goal and deciding to Coach others, it will hold you accountable knowing you are leading others as well. By motivating them, they motivate you. Think of it this way – if you were just starting out in fitness, would you want someone who’s already at their goal barking orders at you? Would you want someone who has never been overweight trying to understand what it really feels like to be in your position? Or would you rather have someone guiding you that you know has been down the same road? Maybe someone who is still ON that same road, but you see that it’s working and you want to see the same success? For some, the idea of a “super fit” person being their coach is intimidating! Also, let’s think about this. While you’re going through your journey, you’re going to start sharing your story, people will start seeing your changes and your progress, and they’re going to start asking questions like, “What program are you using? How did you get those results? What do you eat? How can I get results like you? Can you help me?” This opens the door to build your own business and share products, tips, tricks, ideas and even the coaching opportunity. And by sharing these things, you build your business. And building your business is what brings you success. So really, just by committing to your own journey, you can turn your results and excitement into a little extra cash in your pocket AND help those around you do the same.
So what are the benefits?
Well, there’s a few; quite a few, actually.
- First and foremost, you are making a difference in people’s lives. You are helping people live healthier, move more, reduce stress and stop the cycle of obesity. You are making a difference in your life, the lives of your friends, family and customers, and you are helping to change the path of our children and our country. THAT is powerful.
- You get paid to do it. Seriously, whether you want to make a few extra bucks to pay for a new pair of shoes – or you want to make this your full time job, you can do that. The financial opportunity is ENDLESS.
- As a coach, you receive a 25% discount on all products. Every product, every time, 25% off – including Shakeology, the Ultimate Reset and every program & supplement in the library. And if you’re coaching, you already know that these products work.
- You don’t have to build a website, cold call, distribute catalogs or host “parties.” You are given a personalized website that always has the correct inventory. You are given a personalized email address, and your store is completely online. Can you build a separate blog? Why not. Can you host Shakeology parties, product parties, group workouts, etc.” OF COURSE! But none of these things are things you have to do! For your minimal maintenance fee, all the work is done for you.
- You don’t have to keep inventory or ship ANYTHING. You won’t find 40 copies of Focus T25 in my house – just my own! All orders are handled through Team Beachbody, and they do everything from shipping to returns to customer service. You guide, they ship. Want to get an extra box of Shakeology packets to use as samples? Cool, you can totally do that! But you don’t have to!
- You are your OWN BOSS. It’s your business. You run it your way. If you want to make $20 a week, you can. If you want to be a millionaire, you can. It’s all in how you decide to run your business and how well you stick to the plan to get to where you want to be. You be you! Don’t want to post Instagram sweaty-selfies? You don’t have to! Would you prefer to make a video instead of writing a blog post? Go for it! This is YOUR business!
- As a coach, you make your own schedule. You set your hours, you decide what days to work and you decide what days to take off. You can choose to work part time, full time, or “whenever you have time.” There are no sales goals you have to hit to stay a member of the business. (There are goals that make you eligible for things like leads and bonuses, but they are not requirements to stay in the business!) You don’t have to quit your full time job if you don’t want to – but many find that eventually they can replace it with Coaching!
- As a bonus, being a coach means you get to do all sorts of amazing things. You have the opportunity to take exclusive trips, win amazing prizes, qualify for special bonuses and be the first to hear when something new is coming up. You are an insider. You’re a VIP.
That’s great, but what’s the cost?
Of course, as is the case with starting any kind of business, there are initial investments and maintenance along the way. To get started as a Beachbody Coach, it takes $39.95. That gets you started. It gets your websites, emails, links, personalized materials and discounts all set up and ready to use. After that first month, you are billed about $15 per month (the exact amount depends on taxes in your area), and that $15 is simply a maintenance fee. It’s what keeps your websites running, your coach ID valid and your business active. You’re paying $15 a month for someone to run your website, maintain your email account, send you all the insider information, deliver the news, get you on the weekly calls, maintain all of your tools, deliver you the latest promotion materials and help you manage your business. It’s like having a personal assistant without the cost. I mean, can you find a personal assistant that will do all of that for $15 a month?! If you can, hold on to them, and tell no one of your secret! Starting a business takes a little bit of an investment; but compare that $39.95 set up fee and $15 maintenance fee to the thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars it takes to start up a traditional business, and you really see that it can’t be beat. You can even compare the Coaching investment to other network marketing companies and see that is much lower than many! Really, for the cost, you get so much!
“I hate selling. I don’t want to sell to my friends and family! That’s so annoying and shady!”
Hey guess what – GOOD! There is nothing more slimy and dirty than trying to sell things to your friends and family just to make a buck. Beachbody Coaching is not about pushing products on everyone you’ve ever met and messaging 45 people every day on Facebook asking them to buy your stuff with the same copy and paste messages. No. That’s not how we do things. While making commission on the products we sell is how we make our money, that’s not what our business is about. Building a business is not about “who can sell the most _____ in 30 days.” It’s about connecting with people, inspiring people, building a team of people who want to help change the future of health in our country and across the world. Our business is NOT a “sales business!” In fact, if you ask almost any Coach, they’ll tell you they hate selling too! Most of them will even tell you how “bad” they are at “sales.” Being a Coach isn’t about sales. It’s about sharing and connecting. We believe in our products because we know they work. And when a product works and people see that first hand…they “sell themselves.” You don’t have to push them on anyone! You share your experience, and leave the rest up to the listener. It’s like when you go see a great movie or eat at a new restaurant – when you like it, you’re not hesitant to tell everyone all about it! “Oh you have to see this movie!” or “Oh man, try this place’s chicken parmigiana – it’s the best I’ve ever had!” If the person you told about it ends up going to see that movie or eats at that restaurant, do you feel like you “sold” something to them? No, you shared an experience and left the rest up to them. You shared a passionate opinion that you are able to back up with your own experience. You shared it with someone who you thought would appreciate it or someone who showed interest! That is what you do as a Coach! Share your experience, give more info to those who want it, encourage them to give it a try, and leave the ultimate decision up to them.
“…but wait, you make money and recruit people? Isn’t that one of those illegal pyramid schemes?”
Oh, this question. I can’t tell you how many times people have used this as their only reason for not getting on board, even if they were interested in every other aspect. *sigh* So, first, let’s explain something about the difference between “pyramid style businesses” and the illegal Ponzi Schemes. They are, in fact QUITE different. A Ponzi Scheme is “a fraudulent investment program that pays returns to its investors from their own money or the money paid by subsequent investors, rather than from profit earned by the individual or organization running the operation.” That is illegal. If you look up the definition on BusinessDictionary.com, you will read this: “Scam in which gullible public is enticed with the promise of very high returns in a very short time, but is based on paying off the early ‘investors’ from the cash from (hopefully ever increasing number of) new ‘investors.’ The whole structure collapses when the cash outflow exceeds the cash inflow. The originators of the scheme, however, usually disappear with large sums a few days before the crash.” That is not what we do. What we do is not a Ponzi Scheme because our profits are made through sale of products – not by way of investments, entrance fees and false hope. We make income the same way any retail outlet makes income – by way of selling products. The only thing that makes us different is how we do it. Rest assured, you are getting involved with a 100% legal business with stories of success that go back years. Want to meet a few millionaires who made their money in Beachbody? I can give you names of ones I know personally. Want to meet someone who just likes to make some spare cash? Hi, you’re reading her blog. Beachbody is legit. Beachbody is a well-established company that has been around for over 10 years and has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. In 2006, Beachbody earned $139 million in revenue. By 2008 that had more than doubled to $300 million. Each year, these profits grow, and Beachbody spends over $90 million in advertising each year, which allows for 50,000 paying customers every week and over 3 million transactions annually. And where do you think those purchases go? Coaches. Beachbody started this opportunity so it could give its customers a free coach to help them with their journeys and give the coaches a reward…paying customers. It’s a company that rewards everyone – customer and coach. This is a legitimate, at home business opportunity. It is work, but it is legal, honest work. Do not confuse the Beachbody opportunity with the illegal Ponzi Scheme. The reason many call it a “pyramid scheme” (besides the fact that they don’t know what a Ponzi Scheme really is…) is simply because it’s structured like a pyramid. People sign on under you, and those people sign on others, and so on and so on. But here’s the thing: the people who you sign on…have the ability to pass you up in income, rank, etc. It’s not a “bottom fish feed the top fish” business. So really the idea of the pyramid is debunked. Also, a quick side note, think about a corporate job. Doesn’t that look like a pyramid too?
“So how much time will it take before I’m successful?”
Just like your fitness, any other job, and any other goal you set for yourself, the more focused time and effort you put in the faster you will see success. This business is simple: you get back what you put in. If you want to make a little extra side cash, you can work part time. If you want to replace your full time job, you can do that too – it will just take more focus, time and effort. And hey, if you just want to do this an hour or two each week just to get a sweet discount on your Shakeology, that’s cool too! This is your business. You can run it however YOU decide. Most of us get into the business with at least the goal of covering our own Shakeology cost and adding a few extra dollars to our bank accounts each week. My recommendation is to start with about 5-10 hours each week, just to get your wheels. Learn the business, get familiar with what it is you want to do, watch the training videos, listen to some calls, read some success stories and really understand what it will take to get to where you want to be. Once you’re familiar with what it takes to achieve your goal, then you can adjust the time you spend on this each day. Maybe you’ll devote more time, or maybe you won’t. The cool thing about this business is that because it’s a network business, it’s all about your relationships, other people and being social. That is how you build a business! You don’t have to lock yourself in an office or be on the phone for 4 hours a day after you come home from your 8 hour job in order to be successful! You can do this from home, the coffee shop, at your kids’ soccer game…wherever you come into contact with other people. I mean, how many times have you seen a friend and had a conversation where something like this comes up:
“Oh my god, [your name here] you look great! How do you do it? How do you find the time? You’re just as busy as I am! I wish I could find the time to do that!”
Bingo. Your reply?
“Thanks! I’ve actually been doing this program called 21 Day Fix! It’s only 30 minutes a day and it makes nutrition SUPER easy too. You totally have time for that! I can show you how to find the time if you’d like.”
See how easy that is? And think about this! With tools like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blogs, email, text messaging, YouTube, etc…connecting with THOUSANDS of people is easier than it ever has been! If you’re still struggling to figure out where you’re going to find “5-10 hours a week” to do this, think about how much time you spend doing mindless tasks like watching TV, playing games on your phone, reading gossip, or just scrolling through your Facebook news feed. I’m sure if you replaced some of that time with focused, goal-driven tasks, you’d be amazed how much you accomplished! 5-10 hours a week is 1-2 hours each weekday. It doesn’t all have to be at once! 10 minutes here, 25 there, answer some emails while dinner is cooking…it’s easy to find that time if you really try! If you need help managing time, I can help you. Check out my blog on Time Management or send me an email and we can work one on one.
“That sounds great but I really don’t have $39.95 to start and I can’t afford a monthly fee…”
First question: can you really “not afford” it, or are you just afraid to invest that minimal amount in a business? If you tell me you “really can’t afford it,” I’m going to make you be honest with me. Do you buy coffee in the mornings? Do you get your nails done on a regular basis? Do you frequently go out for lunch or dinner? How often do you spend money on things you absolutely don’t need? While I’m sure there are some of you out there who really can’t afford it – you’re barely getting by, can hardly pay rent, have an empty fridge and haven’t bought a new pair of pants in six years – most of you who tell me you “can’t afford it” really can…you just choose not to, or you’re actually afraid to do it. What are you actually afraid of? Are you afraid of taking a chance? Afraid it won’t work out? Afraid that your family will think you’ve lost your mind? Well with Team Beachbody, there are only two things you’re going to lose – extra unwanted weight and fear. Unlike many other business start-ups where you give your all and you hope and pray that “everything works out” so you don’t lose the thousands of dollars and countless hours you’ve already invested, Team Beachbody is risk free. For one, if you sign up as a coach while purchasing a challenge pack, your $39.95 is completely refunded – so you’re becoming a coach for free. (You will still have the monthly maintenance fee, but that “scary” $39.95 is wiped out!) And also, even if you don’t get a challenge pack, you have a full 30 days to decide if coaching is right for you. If you put in a little time, give it an honest shot, you’ll probably see that your costs will be totally paid for in that first 30 days…and more! But if not, there’s no risk. If you give it a shot and you find out that it’s not a fit for you, you can quit – no harm done, no financial commitment, nada. You’re refunded and we say thanks, and we keep in touch in whatever way you do feel is right for you. But really, MOST PEOPLE will have that $39.95 and more paid off in the first 30 days. And when you see how easy it really is to get things rolling, you will see business pick up and understand why so many of us join and stick around! So don’t fear signing up just because it’s a ridiculously small financial commitment to get started. The minimal amount you put into this business can change your life in no time – so really, can you afford not to do it?!
In today’s world, nothing is certain, so it seems. Jobs come and go. Families grow and expand, life changes so fast! So why not have a “job” that allows you the flexibility to live at that ever-changing pace? Why not join a team of people who are committed to living life on their own terms, creating a healthier, brighter future for future generations, and make a living without clocking in and clocking out? It can be done, and so many are already doing it! I understand that investing in yourself and starting a business can be stressful, scary, intimidating and make you worry “did I do the right thing” a hundred times. But trust me, it’s worth it! I’m here to walk you through the process. As your coach I am here to make sure you succeed and hit whatever goals you set for yourself. If I don’t have the answer, I make it my mission to find someone who does! Starting up a business may mean temporarily cutting back on some things like upgraded cable TV, Netflix, going out to dinner, catching movies at the theater, the bi-weekly mani-pedi…but keep in mind, cutting back on these things now doesn’t mean forever. In fact, if you cut back on needless things now, devote some time to building your own business and start seeing progress…you’ll have them back in your life in no time at all! Just by cutting back on a few things you don’t need, you can bring in extra income to do more things that you want to do! That’s SO HUGE!
Hopefully this breakdown has helped to answer some of the questions you had about coaching, and hopefully it clarifies a lot of the blurry parts you may have not completely understood. But of course, I’m sure some of you still have questions and things you’re wondering. I would love to help you! Let’s talk a little bit more and really connect on our passions. This is the most rewarding business I have ever found – emotionally and financially – and I would be honored to have you join me in the fun. It’s a blast!
